Little Amal is brought to life with the sounds of horns and beeps (interpreted by local musician) at a point where she is crossing over Buford Highway to Northeast Plaza in Brookhaven of Atlanta Georgia, a place of importance for local immigrants and communities. As a 10-year-old, she’s scared and intimidated, however, she’s also feeling the beats of WELCOME being played by African Drumming musicians at the entry point into the plaza.
As she makes her way crossing over the seven lanes of the Highway, she is greeted by other immigrant/refugee children and walks through performing artists representing the multicultural fabrics in which her growing sense of belonging resonates.
The walk which occurs inside Northeast Plaza’s diverse communities, includes Aztec Dancers, a CARE package, and ends with the Chinese Ribbon Dance, in front of Yehimi Cambrón’s, Mi Gente mural, a symbiotic message of immigrants in search of identity, belonging, and self-acceptance.
